JOINTS ARTICULATION –
9 MOVEMENT PRIMITIVES

9 - 20 November 2026

In the online classes, we introduce *9 movement primitives* that form the foundation of our *Joints Articulation* practice.
This small vocabulary of fundamental movement actions provides the roots from which variations and combinations can be formed. From a limited number of elements, a much larger landscape of movement becomes possible.

DESCRIPTION

The nine primitives function less as forms to be perfected and more as *generative building blocks*. They provide enough structure to begin, while leaving space for each practitioner to explore different directions, ranges, rhythms, transitions and relationships between joints.

As the primitives begin to combine, Joint Articulation gradually moves from learning individual actions toward discovering how movement can travel through and reorganise the body as a whole.

The number nine is not accidental.

Our starting point comes from the traditional practice *Siu Kao Tin — the “Nine Little Heavens”, also referred to within this lineage as **Kao Lun Kung — the “work” or “power of the Nine Wheels.”* In this traditional map, the body is approached through nine major regions or “wheels” of articulation:

*ankles — knees — hips — lumbar–pelvic region — shoulders — neck — elbows — wrists — fingers.*

The image of a *wheel* is important.

A wheel is not simply a joint possessing a certain amount of range. It suggests *rotation, continuity and transmission*. One wheel can set another into motion. Movement initiated below can continue upward; movement beginning in the centre can spread toward the extremities; one articulation can accommodate, redirect or amplify what another has begun.

In the traditional form, these nine wheels provide a way of systematically travelling through the articulated body. In Joint Articulation, we take this inherited map as a *point of departure rather than a final form*.

We ask what happens when the wheels begin to relate.

How does movement of the ankle alter the knee and hip?
How does the pelvis reorganise the spine?
How does movement of the spine arrive at the shoulder, elbow, wrist and fingers?

Gradually, nine separate territories become less important than the *relationships between them*.

The wheels become pathways.

And the practice moves from articulating joints toward investigating the *continuity of the whole body*.
